Web-Based Questions

  1. Web-Based Question: Bureaucracy and inefficiency-the post office versus UPS Some economists contend that public agencies generally are less efficient than private businesses. United Parcel Service (UPS) competes directly with the U.S. Postal Service for express mail and packages. Assume you need to send an express letter and a three-pound package from your address to either New York City or Los Angeles. On the basis of their interactive rate and options calculators at www.ups.com and www.usps.com, which service is more competitive as to price and delivery? Does a lower rate with greater delivery options mean greater efficiency? Why or why not?

  2. Web-Based Question: Federal Tax-Rate Cuts-Did They Occur? In spring 2001 the Bush Administration proposed sizable cuts in personal income tax rates. The internal Revenue Service (IRS) provides current tax tables online at www.irs.ustreas.gov. Select Tax Info for You and Tax Tables. Compare the rates shown with the 2000 tax rates listed in Table 5.1 on page 87 of this book. Did Congress reduce Federal income tax rates? If so, update Table 5.1.
