Dental Technicians Job Description
Dental technicians are responsible for the making and repair of dental prosthetics such as braces, dentures, crowns, bridges etc. Dentists frequently require prosthetics for treatment. Each patient has a unique requirement for which dental technicians must make customized prosthesis. Dental technicians are important members of the dental team and must be highly skilled with excellent hand-eye coordination. While many technicians develop their skills through on the job training, most employers prefer to hire certified dental technicians.
Education and Training
Aspiring dental technicians can choose from many available options which lead to degrees or professional certifications. There are numerous accredited training courses to choose from. In addition to courses, most dental technician schools offer associates degrees and bachelor’s degrees. Associate degrees are two year programs where as bachelor’s programs can be as long as four years.
Admission Requirement and Course Details
A high school diploma or equivalent qualification is the only requirement for admission in any of the dental laboratory technology programs. However, to be a successful dental technician, candidates must possess additional qualities such as an artistic aptitude, manual dexterity and decent computer know how. Some schools may have specific requirements of having studied science and mathematics at high school level.
Almost all dental technician programs begin with the basics of introducing laboratory equipment and materials, orthodontic appliances, dental anatomy etc. Emphasis is laid on practical hands on experience and repeated exercises in manufacturing of the most commonly required prosthetics by dentists. Programs of longer duration include more theoretical coursework while at the same time providing students with broader practical exposure which involves improvisation and methods of addressing unique and extraordinary requirements. The bachelor’s program typically includes:
- Introduction of dental terms and definitions, build of the human mouth and teeth etc.
- The art and science of fabricating and repairing braces, false teeth, bridges and other prosthetics.
- Use of various materials and tools, soldering and welding techniques etc.
- Extensive practical training of commonly required prosthetics as well as tools and techniques for custom requirements
