Sumitabha Das has a degree in electrical engineering from Calcutta University (1977). He left the program halfway through working on his Master's degree to become Deputy Director of the Indian Ministry of Defense. There, he handled a variety of jobs ranging from maintenance of numerical control machines and materials management to the production of tank gun barrels for the Army. In 1986 he found himself stranded in a department where a Xenix machine had just been commissioned, and no one knew how to handle it. That was his first encounter with computers and marked the beginning of a passion that was to last till this day.
Having earned the ire of his superiors for being too involved with UNIX and neglecting paper work (which he doesn't regret at all), Sumitabha left the job (1989) to form his own company. Having initially offered consulting services in UNIX system administration and Oracle DBA, he now focuses on providing Linux-based Internetworking solutions. In 1993 his book on UNIX hit the Indian market. Today, it is in its second edition and remains the undisputed market leader. Your UNIX: The Ultimate Guide is a collection of Sumitabha's harrowing experiences and the ultimate delight he found in the UNIX world.
Sumitabha was born of immigrant parents (the family moved to India from Bangladesh before he was born) and has two older sisters. Today, he lives in Calcutta with his wife Julie, daughter Sohini, and parents. A habitual dabbler in the stock market and an ardent admirer of German thoroughness, he understands only two kinds of music - the music of Beethoven and that of others.
