James L. Mohler

James L. Mohler, currently an Assistant Professor at Purdue University, received his Bachelor degree from the Department of Technical Graphics in December of 1992. While pursuing this degree he began working as an illustrator for this text, eventually seeing its completion late in 1993. Desiring to teach and having a diverse graphics background, he continued his education in by pursuing a Master's degree in technical and vocational education; focusing on interactive multimedia use in higher education.

Although quite new to the duties and responsibilities of a full-time faculty member, James has taught courses from CAD to illustration at all levels of post-secondary education. Currently he is developing a course in drawing systems. A unique feature of this course is that all materials for it are being distributed to the students, and to instructors at remote sites, via the World Wide Web. Lectures are given via network connection in the classroom to a remote server containing the materials. Students can access the same materials in the laboratory setting. Materials for instructors at remote sites are distributed using logins and passwords; giving them instant access to all materials used at the West Lafayette Campus.

In addition to his scholarly activities, James also serves as Director of Multimedia Development for the Technical Graphics Centers for Excellence; a university venture to form mutually beneficial relationships between the university and industry. Through external consulting, James has created interactive products for companies such as Autodesk, Inc., Cummins Engine Company, Inc., FairField Manufacturing Company, Inc., Irwin Publishing, Macmillan Computer Publishing, and State Farm Insurance. James is also actively involved in several professional societies including the National Association of Desktop Publishers (NADTP), the Engineering Design Graphics Division of the American Society of Engineering Educators (EDGD/ASEE), the Society for Applied Learning Technologies (SALT), and SIGGRAPH.
