Overview

The Engineering Student Survival Guide is not your usual textbook. The second edition of The Engineering Student Survival Guide offers all the information and strategies to get the most out of your engineering college education (rather that letting it get the most out of you). This is a revision of the first edition plus much more. From freshmen orientation to senior year, this book covers topics pertinent and unique to all engineering students by answering questions such as:

  • What are the ten surefire ways to tackle an engineering test problem when you are stumped? See Chapter 7.
  • What do professors (and TAs) really want to see in lab reports? See Chapter 6.
  • How do you balance life, school, and sanity? (Is caffeine the answer?) See Chapter 10.
  • Will an engineering job be like doing problem sets all the time? See Chapter 8.
  • What can you do when your professor's teaching style doesn't match your learning style? See Chapter 5.
  • How can you ergonomically mesh with your personal computer? See Chapter 10.

The Engineering discipline is not your usual set of university courses either. Attrition in the Engineering disciplines at all universities is a huge problem. This book is the remedy! In its first edition, The Engineering Student Survival Guide promised to educate all interested in the Engineering area as a whole. Educators, parents, and students bought this book because of their great interest in seeing engineers thrive, and they made it wildly successful.

In this edition, Krista Donaldson, of Stanford University, capitalizes on the most important information from the first edition and then goes further. There is more information about engineering careers and the discipline generally. This practical approach is edging out the voluminous, traditional introduction to engineering books. The second chapter has been heavily revised with a completely new section entitled, "Ten Tricks of the Old-Timers" (Upperclassmen). Also, a new chapter completely devoted to Research Assistantships, Co-ops, and Internships has been added. Finally, included in the book are anecdotes from the real engineers, engineering factoids, an up-to-date listing of all major engineering societies and organizations, and the most useful scientific formulas and tables.

This book is part of the B.E.S.T. (Basic Engineering Series and Tools) Series, which consists of modularized textbooks offering virtually every topic and specialty likely to be of interest to engineers. All texts boast distinguished authors and the most current content. The goal of this series is to provide the educational community with material that is timely, affordable, of high quality, and flexible in how it is used. Now these B.E.S.T. titles can be customized on-line to be sold to students either electronically or traditionally through bookstores.
