Introduction

The Athletic Training Educational Competencies for the health care of athletes and others involved in physical activity have been identified as those necessary for effective performance as an entry-level Certified Athletic Trainer (AT,C). The competencies serve as a guide for the development of educational programs and learning experiences leading to eligibility for NATA Board of Certification recognition as a Certified Athletic Trainer. These competencies are required for curriculum development and education of the student enrolled in an CAAHEP-accredited entry-level athletic training educational program. Each competency is identified in this document in conjunction with the 10th edition of Principles of Athletic Training by Arnheim & Prentice.

Getting Ready for Certification: The Competencies is intended to assist you in identifying the knowledge and skills to be mastered within an entry-level athletic training educational program. Similar to the NATABOC document, this document is categorized according to the twelve content areas that comprise the role of the Certified Athletic Trainer in the health care of athletes and others involved in physical activity. The competencies identified within each domain are categorized by: (1) Cognitive Domain (knowledge and intellectual skills), (2) Psychomotor Domain (manipulative and motor skills), and (3) Affective Domain (attitudes and values). Each domain and competency in this document is numbered consistently with the NATABOC document. Corresponding page locations in Principles of Athletic Training, 10th edition, follow to conveniently correlate each competency with the text to increase your understanding of each. In addition to the competencies identified in this document, the list of clinical proficiencies is also provided following the applicable domain. Corresponding page locations in Principles of Athletic Training, 10th edition, are also provided. Because of the diverse employment settings for Certified Athletic Trainers, the lists do not necessarily include all clinical proficiencies that will be required in all clinical settings as these may require additional or specialized education.

Certified Athletic Trainers and other instructional personnel can utilize this document to assist in structuring the clinical education experience for the student. Students preparing for careers in athletic training should find this document helpful as a self-study guide to evaluate their strengths and areas for improvement.
