A comprehensive model which integrates different behavioral change theories and constructs:
- Decision balance
- Social support
- Relapse prevention
An important advance of this model is the distinction of different stages of change. Different behavior changestrategies are advocated for different stages of change (see Web 02-2 for more details)
The stages of change model is one model that I think can improve the way we deliver interventions. Bandura argues that this model is really not that different from social cognitive theory but I donít think it was intended as a theory but more of a model.
The essence of the model is that different behavaioral modification techniques may be needed for different individuals depending on their stage of change.
Initiation of exercise: expectancy value models, self-efficacy
Maintenance of exercise: Self-efficacy, locus of control, PEAS
Relapse Prevention: Self - regulation
