Acute fractures can be “open” or “closed”
Stress fractures or “fatigue fractures” are cracks or incomplete fractures that occur from more chronic overuse or misuse.

This graphic indicates a complete fracture of the humerus. This type of injury would typically occur from acute trauma. Small cracks or stress fractures, however, can occur from overuse (especially from running).
