Notes:
There are a variety of activities that people can use to stay active. An activity that is often overlooked is commuting to work or school. It provides numerous advantages and offers considerable cost savings to the individual and to society as a whole.
Data from a1994 survey sponsored by Rodale Press, found that only 2% of Americans use bicycles as their primary mode of transportation, however an estimated 3 million people use a bicycle to get to work. Data from a 1991 Lou Harris poll, indicate that the use of commuting is more common among younger aged adults and decreases precipitously in middle age.
