Established in 1851, the American Geographical Society is an important supporter of academic geography in the United States. The Society publishes Focus, an entertaining magazine written by geographers and designed for a general audience, and the Geographical Review, a much-respected academic journal.

- Association of American Geographers (AAG)
The AAG is the primary professional organization of geographers in the United States. The site offers career information, links to the numerous AAG specialty groups, and conference information. The AAG holds an annual meeting each spring that includes some paper sessions for undergraduate students. In addition, the AAG publishes the Annals of the Association of American Geographers and The Professional Geographer. Both are required reading for professional geographers. The AAG offers a significant discount for student members.

- National Council for Geographic Education
The NCGE is an important site for students and teachers of geography. In addition to collegiate geography, the site also offers information for teachers of elementary and secondary students. The NCGE publishes the Journal of Geography, a periodical with basic geography articles and information for teachers.
