- Geomagnetism at NGDC
The study of geomagnetism is one of the oldest of the geophysical sciences. The National Geophysical Data Center maintains extensive archives of geomagnetic data to further the understanding of Earth magnetism. http://www.ngdc.noaa.gov/seg/potfld/geomag.shtml (Added: Fri Feb 14 2003)

- The Great Magnet, the Earth
This web site provides a comprehensive view of the Earth's magnetic field. It discusses the life of William Gilbert who laid the foundations for the modern study of the Earth's magnetism in 1600 when he published his book, "De Magnete" (On the Magnet). It describes work by Halley, Oersted, Faraday, Gauss and other pioneers in the subject. It includes discussion the dynamo process by which the field is believed to be generated in the liquid core, the reversals of magnetic polarity and their link to the geology of plate tectonics. It includes discussion of the magnetic fields of the Sun, other stars, Jupiter, and other planets in our Solar system. http://www-spof.gsfc.nasa.gov/earthmag/demagint.htm (Added: Fri Feb 14 2003)
