This is a particularly unique LTER (Long-Term Ecological Research) site, as nearly all others are in pristine ecological habitats. It includes projects that school children may participate in, and which may be applicable to many urban sites.

  • Ranking the Ecological Impact of Nations - Look to this site for a table that shows the ecological "footprint" of countries worldwide. The ecological footprint measures how much ecological capacity we occupy. Some countries claim more ecological capacity than there is within their boundaries. This means that they run an ecological deficit. Compare the United States to, for example, Bangladesh or Ethiopia.
  • Sprawl Campaign–Sierra Club - A current campaign is to "Stop Sprawl.) Information on our ever-spreading population and the effects on the environment, our schools, and our lives. Check their clickable map to see if you are in the top sprawl-threatened cities! Atlanta, GA is the most threatened among the large cities. Los Angeles is mentioned as the example of how not to develop, exemplified decades ago. Also, a discussion on how to build a livable community.
  • The Center for Urban Ecology - This center, located in Washington DC operates under the National Parks Service and attempts to elucidate the relationship between human-dominated urban areas, the environment, and the other inhabitants. There is information on subjects ranging from soil compaction to urban wildlife.
