Warm-ups

Warm-ups appear before each set of exercises at the end of every section. They are true or false statements that can be used to check conceptual understanding of material within each section.

The theme of mathematics in every day situations is carried over to the exercise sets. Applications based on real-world data are included in each set. The Applications Index can help students to quickly identify exercises that associate the mathematics that may be used in their areas of interest.

Getting More Involved appears within selected exercise sets. This feature may contain Writing, Cooperative Learning, Exploration, and/or Discussion exercises. Each of these components is designed to give students an opportunity to improve and develop the ways in which they express mathematical ideas.

Each exercise set contains exercises that are keyed to examples, as well as exercises that are not keyed to examples. The end-of-chapter Review Exercises identify those that are not keyed to an example as "Miscellaneous" exercises.
