Instructions:
The "loran" (long-range navigation) system is illustrated in this interactive application. Boaters with a loran unit can determine their location based on the difference in time that it takes radio signals from pairs of fixed points to reach the boat. Within the loran unit, the signals are converted into the equations of two hyperbolas that pass through the location of the boat.
The 4 boxes in the application allow you to change the signal time in even units from 1 to 10. Change the values and watch the hyperbolas change. Then do the textbook problem number 53, which is located on page 609.
