This interactive application illustrates the engineering formula of Q = 3.32LH^3/2 to determine maximum discharge that a dam can pass before the water breaches its abutments. You can change L, the length of the spillway in feet, and H, the depth of the spillway in feet. Change the values and find the maximum discharge.

Next, click on the button next to "Find H" and see the calculations if you know Q and L. Then go to page 444 of your textbook and try problem 138.
