Realistic Examples

In keeping with the strong applications orientation of the text, each topic in the textbook is motivated by realistic worked examples that help students see the mathematics in a context they may encounter. Many new practical examples have been added to the new edition and many existing examples have been modified throughout the text. Examples that introduce key topics such as the limit, the derivative, and the integral have been carefully rewritten with an eye toward realism.

Referenced Examples and Exercises

In addition to realistic worked examples, every chapter also includes a number of referenced examples that are based on journal articles or information found in other texts. Problems based on the same journal or text are included and range from routine to challenging. Both the examples and the problems introduce issues of practical interest that involve mathematics, helping students relate the mathematics they are learning to the real world.
