Suggested Syllabi

Programs with a one-course mathematics requirement for elementary school teachers have a wide variety of topics from which to choose for this course. Two different options for such a course are outlined below. The amount of time spent on each section will vary depending on the use of the one-page math activities in the text and possibly the use of the activity sets from the companion book, Mathematics for Elementary Teachers: An Activity Approach.

Option I - Single Course

Chapter 1, Sections 1.1, 1.2 (problem solving)

Chapter 2, Section 2.2 (functions and graphs)

Chapter 3, Sections 3.1, 3.2, 3.3, 3.4 (numeration and whole numbers)

Chapter 4, Sections 4.1, 4.2 (number theory)

Chapter 5, Sections 5.1, 5.2, 5.3 (integers and fractions)

Chapter 6, Sections 6.1, 6.2, 6.3 (decimals, ratios, percents)

Chapter 10, Sections 10.1, 10.2, 10.3, 10.4 (geometric figures, tessellations, symmetry)

Option II - Single Course

Chapter 1, Section 1.1 (problem solving)

Chapter 3, Sections 3.1, 3.2, 3.3, 3.4 (numeration and whole numbers)

Chapter 5, Sections 5.1, 5.2, 5.3 (integers and fractions)

Chapter 6, Sections 6.1, 6.2, 6.3 (decimals, ratios, percents)

Chapter 10, Sections 10.1, 10.2, 10.3, 10.4 (geometric figures, tessellations, symmetry)

Chapter 11, Sections 11.1, 11.2, 11.3, 11.4 (measures of area, perimeter, volume)

 

Programs with a two-course sequence are able to accommodate more topics, and depending on time devoted to the one-page math activities in the text and possibly the use of additional activity sets, such as those from the companion book, Mathematics for Elementary Teachers: An Activity Approach, will use most of the topics in the text. One option for a two-course sequence is outlined below.

Chapter 9, Sections 9.1, 9.2 (probability, expected value, simulations)

Chapter 10, Sections 10.1, 10.2, 10.3, 10.4, 10.5* (geometric figures, tessellations, symmetry)

Chapter 11, Sections 11.1, 11.2, 11.3, 11.4 (measures of area, perimeter, volume)

Chapter 12, Sections 12.1, 12.2, 12.3, 12.4* (congruence, constructions, similarity)
