PowerPoint© ( Presentations and Transparency Masters Applied Statistics: Improving Business Processes, First Edition

Introduction

This book and the enclosed diskettes contain about 400 presentation slides produced with Microsoft PowerPoint( 4.0 to be used in conjunction with Bowerman and O'Connell's Applied Statistics: Improving Business Processes, First Edition textbook.

The files and/or slides on the diskettes are fully accessible with the commercial version of PowerPoint( 4.0 (or 7.0) and can be arranged, altered and/or expanded to fit the needs of the user. For those who don't have the full commercial version of the software, a runtime viewer version is included with this package. This version however does not allow the manipulation of the slides as with the complete product. The individual slides contain transitions and text/graphical animation that provides a high degree of effectiveness and impact for a classroom presentation environment. In classroom situations where a multimedia setup is not available, the printed material here presented can be copied onto overhead transparencies and used in a traditional overhead projection manner.

Setup and Operation

Before proceeding, a backup of the original diskettes is recommended.

To install the transparencies in your computer's hard disk proceed as follow:

1. (Windows( 3.x) Insert diskette 1 in your Drive A and from the Program Manager window select File, Run. Type: A:\setup and press the Enter key. Follow the directions of the installation program.

2. (Windows( 95) Insert diskette 1 in your Drive A, click the Start and Run buttons. select Run. Type: A:\setup and press the Enter key. Follow the directions of the installation program.

The installation program will create an icon group named: Bowerman PowerPoint Presentation. Clicking this icon will start the PowerPoint( Viewer. The presentations are divided into chapters that correspond to the textbook chapters. Click on any of the chapters to start a presentation. Once the presentation starts, left clicking the mouse button advances the slides, right clicking backs them up. Some slides require left clicking the mouse to advance text or graphics within the slide. Annotations on the slides are possible by left clicking the mouse on the pen icon located in the bottom right of the screen. This will turn the pointer into a pen, which by depressing the left mouse button allows for (temporary) annotations to be made on the slide. To continue, click on the pointer icon located also in the bottom right corner of the screen. A special PowerPoint( file named GRAPHIC.PPT contains commonly used graphics and templates to help with a variety of topics.

Printing Slides and Handouts

Handouts containing 2, 4 or more mini-slides per page can be printed only with the full version of PowerPoint( 4.0 (or 7.0). This can be done by selecting File, Print, and from the dialog box select the format that you would like to print (Slides or Handouts 2,4,6 per page). Also be sure to have the Pure Black and White box checked out, this allows for faster printing of the handouts or slides.

Other Notes

* Putting the transparencies in a network server will allow students to have access (and print) the transparencies at their convenience.

* The slide transitions and/or animation settings can be easily changed to suit your presentation style (only with the full commercial version of PP). * Always bring backup overhead transparencies to your lectures, this may save your lecture in case your multimedia computer and/or hardware fails.

* An HTML file named STATRSRC.HTM is included in the distribution diskette. This file if read with a WWW browser contains a large number of links to statistics resources on the Internet.

* A Microsoft Word( 5.0 template named TEMPLATE.DOT also included, may be used to facilitate the creation of your course syllabus (this can only be used if you have Microsoft Word( 5.0 or higher). This template uses click-and-type fields for an easy entry of your own information (College/University/Department names, Course title, etc.). Fields and information already there can be easily modified accordingly to your taste/needs.

* The STATRSRC.HTM & TEMPLATE.DOT files can be found on your hard drive under C:\Bowerman\txfiles after you install this program.
