Chapter 2: Eden Questioned: Historical Perspectives

Overview
This chapter provides a brief history of the development of evolutionary concepts and models. It explains how contributions from the disciplines of geology and biology in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries led to the realization that the earth and the life it supports are far older and subject to much greater change than anyone had previously believed. It then details the contributions of archaeology and cultural anthropology to the study of human antiquity and cultural evolution. It concludes with a critical look at a pseudo-science bearing the misnomer "scientific creationism."
