Chapter 8: The Emergence of the Human Lineage

Overview
This chapter presents the fossil evidence for the first hominids. It describes their most significant anatomical characteristics and explains how the trait that most distinguishes them from apes - their bipedal locomotion - may have arisen. It also presents an alternative to traditional methods of classification that is based on evolutionary relationships rather than phenotypic similarities and differences.
