Overview
This chapter introduces the earliest members of our species - premodern Homo sapiens. It explains how they differ anatomically from Homo erectus and presents the fossil evidence from Africa, Europe and Asia. A major advance by premodern Homo sapiens in stone tool technology, the Levallois method, is explained in detail. The best known premodern humans, the Neandertals, are treated as a special case, with a detailed look at their anatomy and the fascinating contributions of molecular archaeology to the long-standing question of the their place in human evolution.
