Chapter 15: The Evolution of Civilization

Overview
This chapter defines civilization in terms of six universal features and then presents a series of hypotheses for why and how the social, political and economic complexity associated with civilization first developed. It examines the archaeological record for what it can tell us about the specific developmental sequences that transformed Neolithic farming villages into early civilizations in the Old and New Worlds. It concludes with a synthesis of explanatory models for the evolution of civilizations and some thoughts on why civilizations collapse.
