Public speaking anxiety is a social anxiety disorder, and many people experience it. If you do, you are not alone. As your book explains, performance anxiety is normal and for most people does not create significant anxiety beyond the immediate situation. If you feel, however, that your fear and anxiety is significantly worse than your classmates, you might wish to consult these resources:

The Social Anxiety Network provides resources for people hoping to overcome their fears of social situations.

The American Psychological Association offers information about recognizing anxiety disorders.

The Royal College of Psychiatrists in Great Britain offers an online pamphlet discussing symptoms and treatments for anxiety.

The Center for Anxiety and Stress Treatment, a commercial site, offers a range of resources, both to order and to read online.

The most effective help may be close to home. Check with your college or university counseling center for individual help or workshops on performance anxiety.
