Chapter 10: Delivery: Engaging Your Audience Nonverbally

Effective speech delivery begins by focusing on your audience. Nonverbal behaviors may carry different meanings depending on the makeup of your audience. Nonverbal behavior is composed of eight interdependent dimensions: the environment, appearance, the face and eyes, the voice, gestures and movement, posture, touch, and time. These dimensions function to enhance the delivery of speeches. The functions include complementing, contradicting, and repeating the message; substituting for verbal cues; increasing the perception of immediacy; exciting the audience; and delivering a powerful speech. There are many guidelines for proactive delivery; they include familiarizing yourself with your speaking environment, taking control of your appearance, using natural gestures, and working on posture.
