There are three major human causes of shortages of renewable resources. (1) People consume the resources or dilute their quantity faster that the resource can regenerate. (In this regard, a “sustainable economy” is one that uses resources only as fast as they can be renewed.) (2) Population increases put excessive demand on the supply of resources. (3) A few people take control of the resources and restrict distribution of them.
