Substance Use and Abuse

Action on Smoking and Health (ASH). Provides statistics, news briefs, and other information about the negative effects of smoking.

Al-Anon/Alateen. Provides information and referrals to local Al-Anon and Alateen groups.

Alcoholics Anonymous. Provides information on AA, literature on alcoholism, and information about AA meetings.

American Lung Association. Provides information on lung diseases, tobacco control, and environmental health.

CDC’s TIPS: Tobacco Information and Prevention. Provides research results, educational materials, and tips on how to quit smoking.

Greenville Family Partnership. This nonprofit organization was created to unite parents and children to prevent alcohol, and illegal drug use.

Habitsmart. Contains information about addictive behavior, including tips for managing problematic habitual behavior, a self-scoring alcohol checkup, and links to related sites.

Higher Education Center for Alcohol and Other Drug Prevention. Provides information about alcohol and drug abuse on campus and links to related sites; also has an area designed specifically for students.

Medicine OnLine/environmental tobacco smoke. This site contains basic information about environmental tobacco smoke--what is in it and why it is dangerous.

Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD). Supports efforts to develop solutions to the problems of drunk driving and underage drinking.

National Association for Children of Alcoholics (NACoA). Provides information and support for children of alcoholics.

National Clearinghouse for Alcohol and Drug Information. Provides statistics, information, and publications on substance abuse, including resources for people who want to help friends and family members overcome substance-abuse problems.

National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA). Provides information on a variety of alcohol-related topics, including fetal alcohol syndrome, alcoholism treatment, and alcohol use and minorities.

Quitnet. Provides interactive tools and questionnaires, support groups, a library, and the latest news on tobacco issues.

Smokescreen Action Network. Sponsored by an advocacy group for tobacco control, this Web site provides information on your congressional representatives, their voting record on tobacco-related issues, and tobacco PAC money they’ve accepted.

Tobacco BBS. A resource center on tobacco and smoking issues that includes news and information, assistance for smokers who want to quit, and links to related sites.

Tobacco Control Resource Center and Tobacco Products Liability Project (TPLP). Provides current information about tobacco-related court cases and legislation; based at the Northeastern School of Law.

Web of Addictions. Provides a wealth of information about substance abuse and dependence, including fact sheets, contact information for relevant agencies and organizations, and links to related sites.
