Locke and the Bill of Rights
Based in large part on John Locke's political philosophy, the U.S.
Declaration of Independence, Constitution and Bill of Rights serve as the foundations of
our entire political system. Far from being dead issues, the most basic freedoms
enumerated in these documents continue to generate debate. Below you will find links to
these foundational documents. Take some time to read them and compare what you find with
Locke's political philosophy. Do you agree that the United States is a living Lockean
experiment? These links offer you a starting place to investigate some of the current
debates taking place concerning our most basic freedoms. As you explore these issues,
consider the philosophical underpinnings of the various positions. Are we moving away from
the ideal set down by Locke?
