Looking for a Manageable Topic
By now you've probably noticed that "Indians of South America" is one subject heading that will fill in the missing half of our attempt to survey the material dealing with Native Americans on both continents. But by browsing among books in the subject areas and noting the subjects listed at the bottom of the catalog entries, it is possible to collect still more useful subject headings. Here are some examples:
Indigenous peoples -- America
Indians - - Study and Teaching
Paleo-Indians -- North America
Indians of North America -- Antiquities
North America -- Antiquities
Archaeology and History -- United States
We need at least to scan these and other headings to be sure that we're not missing anything. If we want to pursue the archaeological angle, then we will find that the most useful headings are those that relate only to ancient Native Americans, because those headings will weed out huge amounts of source material. Using "Paleo-Indians North American," for example, produces the following "magic solution." Notice that this fairly up-to-date source contains a bibliography (on pages 503-517). Always notice whether a source contains a bibliography that might serve as a "magic solution," saving you hours of source-hunting.
