Chapter 6: Human Adaptation

Learning Objectives

You should be able to answer the following after reading Chapter 6:

  1. Describe the following physiological adaptations of humans: acclimation, acclimatization, developmental acclimatization (plasticity), and provide examples of each.
  2. Analyze the relationship among genetic, cultural and physiological adaptations. Assess some of the difficulties involved in understanding the relationship of each to environmental stresses.
  3. Assess the ways that human populations are adapted to cold and heat stress, including a discussion of morphological variation. Explain the contributing factors of development and genetic adaptation.
  4. Discuss the ways that humans adapt to high altitude stresses. Assess the relationship between high altitude and differences in growth and development.
