The greenhouse
effect. Radiation at visible wavelengths passes freely through the atmosphere
and is absorbed at the ground. The ground heats up and emits infrared radiation.
Atmospheric gases absorb the infrared radiation and warm the atmosphere, which
in turn warms the ground.
