Dust limits our view in the disk of the galaxy and creates the zone of avoidance. e see no galaxies in the plane of our own galaxy because dust in the disk blocks our view. (B) A sketch illustrating why we see so few galaxies along the plane of the Milky  ay. The gray blobs represent dust clouds that block our view toward directions that lie in the Milky  ay's plane. The galaxies are in reality about the same size as the Milky ay and are, of course, much farther way than can properly be shown in the figure.
