13.10 The structure of a star when hydrogen shell burning begins

A star begins its life burning hydrogen in its core. As hydrogen is exhausted, the pressure in the core drops and gravity compresses it. The core contracts and the outer layers expand. Rising heat in the core creates a pressure that causes the outer layers to expand and a shell of hydrogen outside the core ignites. The outer layers expand and cool and the star becomes a red giant.
