1.12 The retrograde movement of Mars

As Mars orbits the Sun, we normally see its position shift eastward against the background stars. However, because the Earth moves around the Sun faster than Mars, from time to time we overtake the red planet and pass it. When that occurs, for a brief period we see Mars shift westward against the stars, a movement called retrograde motion.
