The color variations are only approximate with spectral type, and the depicted sizes of giant and dwarf stars are not to scale. HR diagrams are often drawn somewhat differently from the way depicted here, and often for a particular star cluster or group of stars, not stars in general. Note also that each spectral class is subdivided into categories 0 through 9. Thus the hottest O stars would be O0 and would be plotted at the far left of the chart. The coolest stars would be M9 and would be plotted at the far right of the chart. Additional designations for various subclasses and characteristics also are often used, but for now we are simply interested in the base spectral type and luminosity class..
