First Quarter Moon

The First Quarter Moon rises around noon and is well up in the south (for Northern Hemisphere observers) at sunset. It sets at roughly midnight. Here we see it depicted roughly as it would appear in the southern sky at sunset. Because its path across the sky is an arc, the actual orientation will depend on the exact time of observation. In other words, it may appear tilted back (left or counterclockwise) shortly after it rises, and tilted forward (right or clockwise) shortly before setting.
