New Moon

The New Moon is directly in line with the Sun, and so it rises at around sunrise and sets at about sunset. Being so close to the Sun in the sky, the New Moon itself cannot be seen. However, a few days before the New Moon, a thin Crescent Moon can be glimpsed in the East before sunrise; and a few days after New Moon, a thin Crescent Moon can be seen in the West for a short while after sunset.

If the Moon passes exactly between the Earth and Sun, a solar eclipse can occur. However, the Moon usually passes either above or below the Sun, thus avoiding an eclipse.
