3-17 Ptolemy's model of motion of a planet

To explain retrograde motion, the ancients pictured the planets moving on a small revolving circle, called an epicycle, that itself revolved on a larger circle around the Earth. This creates a looping motion that mimics the normal and retrograde motion that we see.
