OVERVIEW
In the second edition of the popular Chemistry in Context: Applying Chemistry to Society, the American Chemical Society continues their tradition of logically presenting chemistry with a student-centered approach. Emphasizing student discussion, writing, and small-group work, this text encourages scientific literacy with unique presentations of the political, social, and economic implications of chemical facts and phenomena. Chapters begin with a societal-technological issue that forms the context of a particular chapter. Chemical principles are then imbedded within those everyday issues.
FEATURES
The Skeptical Chemist:These in-chapter exercises challenge students to exercise and apply skepticism, sound reasoning, and scientific knowledge in checking the accuracy of assertions reported by the press and others.
Consider This: These activities give students opportunities for critical thinking by asking students to engage in risk-benefit analysis, consider and debate opposing viewpoints, write position papers, and, in general, become informed and concerned citizens.
Your Turn: With these series of traditional problems placed throughout the chapters, students can practice calculations and assess their understanding before advancing to the next concept.
Instructor's Resource Guide: This resource collection including essays and concept map exercises helps professors teach students to think critically and independently, and to evaluate the messages of the media with healthy skepticism.
Support: Students receive the support of a nationally known professional organization whose mission is the advancement of chemistry research and education.
