Chapter 2: Alkanes |
With the basis of structure and bonding behind us, we are ready to begin examining the structure, reaction and applications of organic compounds, and this start with the simplest organic systems, the alkanes.
As you head into all the material ahead, it is important to remember that in almost all of the reactions that you will encounter, the reactions occur directly at or adjacent to the functional groups within the molecule.
The physical properties of molecules such as melting points, boiling points and solubility are dictated by intermolecular forces.
