ChemQuest - Chapter 19
1. The University of Alberta provides an electrochemistry tutorial. Read through the material posted at http://www.chem.ualberta.ca/courses/plambeck/p102/p02092.htm, and answer the following:
- (a) In the four equations, are the species on the left of the equations being oxidized or reduced?
- (b) According to the text, identify the electrode on the left of the diagram.
- (c) According to the text, identify the electrode on the right of the diagram.
- (d) What is taking place at the positive end of the cell? The negative?
- (e) In which direction are the electrons moving?
2. Read the experiment on cell potentials at http://www.public.iastate.edu/~iachemed/FIPSE/RESOURCES/ELECTROCHEM/gcell.html, and then write the half reactions for each reaction that occurred in the three voltaic cells, along with the standard electrode potential for each half reaction.
3. Take a look at the experiment described at http://www.public.iastate.edu/~iachemed/FIPSE/RESOURCES/ELECTROCHEM/faraday-syn.html, and determine how long it would take, using a current of 0.50 A to deplete the copper sulfate.
