Some arrangements of atoms in molecules can have several different ways of arranging the electrons. Though the structures may appear to be different, they are actually resonance structures of the same molecule. Experimental measurements show that neither structure is exactly correct, but that the molecule found in nature is a combination of structures called a resonance structure.
