Balancing Chemical Equations

A balanced chemical equation involves placing whole-number coefficients in front of the substances in the chemical equation with the objective of obtaining the same number of atoms for each element on both sides of the arrow. Often a trial and error approach is used to accomplish this end result. Using the simplest set of whole number coefficients is considered common practice when balancing chemical equations. {Note: subscripts cannot be changed to accomplish a balance as this would result in a change of substance}.
