Energy Flow

Heat is a manifestation of energy change. Virtually all chemical reactions absorb or release energy in the form of heat (q) and/or work (w).

The study of heat change during reactions is referred to as thermochemistry.

When we study thermochemistry, we must define a system and the surroundings. Energy moves from the system to the surroundings or vice-versa in the form of heat.
