Change in Enthalpy

The change in enthalpy (DH) is a state function and can be defined by the initial and final states of reaction or process:

Two different scenarios exist with respect to the change in enthalpy. Exothermic reactions release heat; endothermic reactions absorb heat from the surroundings. Energy figures like the one above demonstrate this graphically.
