Solution & Dilution

Heat is transferred when a pure liquid or solid is dissolved in another liquid (enthalpy of solution). The solute-solute interactions are replaced by solute-solvent interactions.

These effects can be substantial when an ionic solid is dissolved in water and the anion-cation ionic interactions are replaced by hydration of the ions (enthalpy of hydration).
