Alcohols have the structure C-O-H. Alcohols, especially ones with short carbon chains, have properties similar to water (e.g., acidity of the OH proton, ability to form hydrogen bonds, relatively high boiling points).
To name alcohols, use the alkane name, drop the "-e", and add the suffix "-ol". For the example in the figure, "ethane + ol" = ethanol (a two carbon alcohol). |
