4.4 Consider This: The Corn Connection
(page 140)

In 4.3 Consider This, the magazine advertisement, "Driving to Cleaner Air," which promotes oxygenates such as ethanol, was considered. Others advocate ethanol as well, including those who grow corn. You can locate web sites sponsored by corn growers by searching for "ethanol," "gasoline," and "additive" or use the links provided here for Ohio, Minnesota, South Dakota, Kansas, or a national site on ethanol information. Select a site (or two).
a. Who sponsored it?
b. What is the connection between corn and ethanol?
c. What advantages of ethanol are cited?
d. What are some disadvantages of using corn to produce ethanol?

4.18 Consider This: Your Contribution to Air Quality
(page 164)

According to the EPA, driving a car is, "a typical citizen's most "polluting" daily activity."
a. Do you agree? Why?
b. What do cars emit? Information on automobile emissions provided by the EPA (together with the information in your text) can help you fully answer this question.
c. Reformulated gasolines play a role in reducing emissions. Where in the country are reformulated gasolines required? Check the most current list, published on the web by the Environmental Protection Agency. When this book went to press, there were 10 cities listed, but more may have been added.
d. Explain which emissions reformulated gasolines are supposed to lower.

4.19 Consider This: Sloppy Science
(page 164)

Search the web for two articles on gasoline additives. Find an example of an objective article and one that you believe to be biased or contain other flows such as sweeping generalizations that lead to misconceptions or misinterpretations of scientific data. Compare the two articles on the quality of their science and objectivity of their presentation. Provide their titles, authors and URLs. On what basis do you rate the quality of an article? Describe your criteria.
