Laboratory Manual
Chemistry in Context: Applying Chemistry to Society
Third Edition
ISBN 0-697-36026-1
This laboratory manual is specifically designed to support the concepts presented in Chemistry in Context. The experiments use simple chemical equipment and easy-to-follow procedures. Some are adaptations of traditional experiments; others are quite novel. The experiments require little mastery of traditional laboratory techniques, so maximum student time can be devoted to explorations and acquiring data.
If the laboratory manual is not available at your local book store, you can contact McGraw-Hill at 800-262-4729 or fax to 614-759-4729 or email customer.service@mcgraw-hill.com to order. Chemistry in Context Online Learning Center
New to the third edition is the Chemistry in Context Online Learning Center (OLC). This Internet-based resource, for both students and instructors, includes web searching activities that are embedded right in the text as part of the Consider This and Your Turn exercises. End-of-chapter questions also include web-based activities. In addition, the OLC includes searching tips and information to help students evaluate the quality of web sties. Instructors can find links to useful source material for lectures and classroom discussions. For example, check out the instructor's web materials for Chapter 2 (Protecting the Ozone Layer), Chapter 7 (Fires of Nuclear Fission) and Chapter 9 (World of Plastics and Polymers). Also available online are sections of the Instructor's Resource guide (IRG).
Instructor's Resource Guide
Please contact your sales representative for your copy.
This Instructor's Resource Guide (IRG) is designed to supplement the Chemistry in Context, third edition textbook. The intent is to provide information at the practical level to help the course instructor in a variety of ways. It borrows from the experience of instructors who have used and/or written previous editions of CiC.
In a sense, the IRG follows the CiC philosophy in offering suggestions, comments, guidance, helpful hints, materials, and references on a "need-to-know" basis. It provides help with both the textual material and its presentation. The IRG is "user friendly," somewhat like a toolbox in providing a variety of "implements" matched to the task. The broad range of "tools" included can help you to customize how you use Chemistry in Context so as to match best your particular local circumstance, e.g., class size, student audience, class schedule, classroom setting, etc.
Some materials are linked to particular chapters; others are applicable more widely throughout the text. They can assist a professor in making the transition from what might be a chemical principles-based, lecture-centered teaching framework to one using a broader range of teaching techniques and strategies.
