Robert L. Caret

Robert L. Caret was appointed in 1995 as President of San Jose State University (SJSU) of the California State University. San Jose is one of the largest institutions in the CSU System (enrollment of approximately 28,000 head count), offers over 200 graduate and undergraduate programs, is the oldest institution in the system and the oldest public institution on the West Coast (founded in 1857), and has an operating budget over $300,00,000. The institution is organized into eight colleges: Humanities and the Arts, Science, Applied Sciences and Arts, Social Sciences, Social Work, Education, Engineering, and Business. SJSU is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges and maintains accreditation in a wide range of professional programs across all of the colleges. Reporting to the President are the Provost (Vice President of Academic Affairs), the Vice President for Administration, Student Affairs, and Advancement, the Chief Information Officer, the Executive Assistant, the Assistant for Campus Climate, and the Director of Intercollegiate Athletics.

Formerly Dr. Caret served as Provost and Executive Vice President at Towson University. In this role, he served as the Chief Academic Officer of the university and was responsible for the leadership of all academic programs and divisions within the university.

Dr. Caret has been involved in higher education for more than 25 years including administration, research and teaching, and serving as director of numerous special projects. He received his Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from the University of New Hampshire in 1974 and a Bachelors Degree in Chemistry and Mathematics from Suffolk University in 1969. He also received an honorary Doctor of Science degree from Suffolk University in 1996, as well as an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from The National Hispanic University in 1997.

Dr. Caret has numerous publications and presentations in the fields of chemistry, chemical education, and higher education. He has published chapters in two monographs on the mission and role of institutions, and has published four textbooks in the fields of Organic Chemistry and Allied Health Chemistry. He also co-authored the book, Myths and Realities in Higher Education Administration. He is a member and an active participant in numerous regional, national, and international professional groups and organizations.

He has also been involved in a variety of local and national leadership programs (American Council on Education, American Association of State Colleges & Universities/Kellogg) and has worked very closely with economic development agencies, state and local school boards, and other state and local governmental agencies in several states.
