13 Physics in Practice: Gasoline Engines

Instructions:
Click on the "Start Simulation" button to open the applet window. Press the "Init" button then the "Start" button to start the simulation. You can stop the simulation anytime by pressing "Stop," but you have to press "Init" and "Start" again to resume it. 

Notice: Positioning your cursor over the buttons will activate them.

Navigation: You can come back to this window by pressing the "Close Simulation" button on the bottom frame of the utility.

Explanation:
The simulation illustrates the concepts of the Otto cycle and the Otto engine as discussed in the Physics in Practice section titled "Gasoline Engines." As mentioned in the text, the Otto cycle is an idealized gasoline engine. The diagram to the left simulates the one shown in figure B13.1. The corresponding Otto cycle diagram is shown to the right.
